Social Entrepreneurship in Vietnam – Student Application

Program Summary:

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION are a major focus of the Nova Scotia Community College. As part of this work we are presenting the third year of this exciting program opportunity!

This program has NSCC students working with students from Tra Vinh University (TVU) in Vietnam on a business idea that would promote entrepreneurship in the Mekong Delta region of Southern Vietnam. Students will work as a project team and do prior research as to what types of entrepreneurship ventures could be successful in the region. During the time abroad students will interview entrepreneurs and develop a business concept which they will then present to students and staff at TVU.

This program will be for two weeks in June 2018.

 Program Qualifications:

This program is open to first and second year NSCC Students with a passion for social entrepreneurship and business in general. 

  • Student must be in good academic standing
  • Student must have a valid passport or able to get one

About Tra Vinh, Vietnam and Tra Vinh University

Tra Vinh is located in the Mekong Delta region, which is in the Southern part of Vietnam. The city has many famous Khmer pagodas, due to the large number of Khmer Krom, Cambodian people there. Under the Republic of Vietnam, it was the provincial capital of a province with a population of 51,535. The name of the city in Khmer is Preah Trapeang

Currently, Tra Vinh University has more than 40 operational Units, including 12 Schools of: Agriculture and Aquaculture; Applied Chemistry; Basic Sciences; Economics and Law; Education; Engineering Technology; Foreign Languages; Health Sciences; Southern Khmer Language, Culture and Art; Office Administration, Vietnamese Study and Library; and Pre-University.

NSCC has been working with Tra Vinh University for several years now with NSCC employees doing volunteer placements throught the Leave for Change program.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To develop and refine the skills needed to prepare for and participate in an international learning experience including research, organization, risk management, teamwork, interpersonal communication and cultural competence and sensitivity.
  • To identify and reflect on the differences and similarities between Canada and Vietnam in regards to the role of entrepreneurs and business in general.
  • To strengthen academic and portfolio profiles through enhanced research, analytical thinking, planning, communication, innovation, entrepreneurship and applied learning.

Students should complete their application on or before November 17, 2017.  Following interviews with shortlisted candidates, students will be notified in the first half of November if they are accepted to participate in this program.  After receiving approval students will be given a payment schedule and will be expected to pay a $250 deposit as their first payment in December. At this time a learning contract will also be distributed to be signed by students and faculty outlining roles and responsibilities.

Pre-Departure:

  • Students accepted into this program must participate in the pre-departure online course and one-day pre-departure conference on April 6, 2018.
  • Students must follow the NSCC international travel policy

Wait List:

Those who are interviewed but not selected may have the opportunity to be placed on a wait-list until all deposits are received.

Program Cost:

The approximate costs associated with this program are outlined below.  The exact costs will be confirmed by NSCC and TVU and will depend on the Vietnamese Dong exchange rate.  The following costs will be included in your Program Fee payable to Nova Scotia Community College.

Program fee (includes accommodation, local transportation, cultural activities and some meals) $1,400

Additional Individual Costs (may vary depending on individual):

Immunizations and Prescriptions $100
Any meals not included in the Program Fee (estimated) $200
Vietnam entry visa $100

Participants are responsible for the costs of their passport & passport photos ($125), immunizations and prescriptions ($100), entry visa ($100), meals and any additional expenses not outlined in the Program Fee.

Student Bursary

Students will have the opportunity to apply for a bursary of up to $500 from NSCC International (made possible through external funding) to participate in the program. Application details will be sent to those selected to participate in the program.

Withdrawal:

Students who withdraw from this program after they have confirmed their participation will forfeit their deposit.
