Solar Innovation in Kenya – Student Application

Program Summary:

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION are a major focus of the Nova Scotia Community College. As part of this work we are presenting the first year of this exciting program opportunity!

The 2019 Kenya Solar Project is a faculty and student international learning program with the purpose being  to use solar energy innovative solutions at Kenya Coast National Polytechnic (KCNP) in Mombasa, Kenya. The program will provide an opportunity for students from the School of Trades and Technology to analyze, design, document and implement technology to create a “solar bench” where students, staff and the community could charge small devices such as mobile phones. The travel to Kenya will take place over a two and a half week period in May 2019. The project will provide a cross disciplinary senior project learning opportunity for a team of second year students. The NSCC students and faculty will collaborate with counterparts at Camosun College (Victoria, BC) and KCNP.

 Program Qualifications:

This program is open to second-year NSCC students from the following programs:

  • Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Electronic Engineering Technician
  • Electronic Engineering Technologist
  • Energy Sustainability Engineering Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology

Successful completion of this program will provide students with a Senior Applied Research Project and/or Work Experience equivalency. 

 Faculty Involvement:

Selected faculty will provide support to the students during all phases of the program.

About Mombasa, Kenya and KCNP

Mombasa is a city on the coast of Kenya. It is the country's oldest and second-largest city, after the capital Nairobi, with an estimated population of about 1.4 million people in 2016. Its metropolitan region is the second largest in the country and has a population of approximately 3 million people.

NSCC has been working with Camosun College on a Kenya Education for Employment project (KEFEP) since 2017. The focus of the project is to develop new courses in both Electrical and Tourism programs.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To learn about and share best practices to implement solar technology to create an innovative approach to produce power in a simple and cost-effective way.
  • To develop and refine the skills needed to prepare for and participate in an international learning experience including research, organization, risk management, teamwork, interpersonal communication and cultural competence and sensitivity.
  • To strengthen academic and portfolio profiles through enhanced research, analytical thinking, planning, communication, innovation, entrepreneurship, applied learning and marketing.
  • To identify and reflect on the differences and similarities between Canada and Kenya

Selection Criteria:

  • Must be a NSCC student with a valid passport (or the abilitty to get one).
  • Must be a student enrolled in the second year of one of the identified programs
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing.

Students should complete their application on or before October 31, 2018.  Following interviews with shortlisted candidates, students will be notified in the first half of November if they are accepted to participate in this program.  After receiving approval students will be given a payment schedule and will be expected to pay a $5000 deposit as their first payment in December. At this time a learning contract will also be distributed to be signed by students and faculty outlining roles and responsibilities.

  • Students accepted into this program must participate in the pre-departure online course and one-day pre-departure conference on April 12, 2019
  • Students must follow the NSCC international travel policy

Wait List:

Those who are interviewed but not selected may have the opportunity to be placed on a wait-list until all deposits are received.

Program Cost:

The approximate costs associated with this program are outlined below.  The exact costs will be confirmed by NSCC and Mikumi VTC and will depend on the Kenyan Shilling exchange rate.  The following costs will be included in your Program Fee payable to Nova Scotia Community College. 

Program Fee

Airfare, Accommodations, Meals while in Mombasa and Local Transportation $3,400
TOTAL (payable to Nova Scotia Community College) $3,400

Additional Individual Costs (may vary depending on individual):

Passport and Passport Photo $100
Guard.me Travel Health Insurance (mandatory purchase through guard.me). Cost will vary depending on amount of time abroad. $100
Immunizations and Prescriptions $200
Entry visa for Kenya ($50 USD price will vary depending on exchane rate $65 
Additional meals and expenses (not covered by the program fee) $300
TOTAL $765

 Participants are responsible for the costs of their passport & passport photos, immunizations and prescriptions, Travel Health Insurance), Kenya Visa and any meals or other expenses not covered in the program fee.

Student Bursary

Students will have the opportunity to receive a bursary of up to $500 from NSCC International (made possible through external funding) to participate in the program. Application details will be sent to those selected to participate in the program.


Students who withdraw from this program after they have confirmed their participation will forfeit their deposit.
