Program Summary:
ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION are a major focus of the Nova Scotia Community College. As part of this work we are presenting the first year of this exciting program opportunity!
The 2020 NSCC Summer Program “International IT Summer School in Croatia” will provide an opportunity for students from the School of IT and Creative Industries to travel to Algebra University College in Zagreb, Croatia to participate in a three-week summer program in July 2019. The program will consist of a combination of academic sessions, practical workshops and cross-cultural activities during two weeks in Zagreb and one week in Šibenik (on the Adriatic Sea). In addition, this program will also include a number of site trips and visits to local attractions.
Students will have the opportunity to choose between three course options: Cyber Security Digital Marketing and Internet of Things.
Program Qualifications:
This program is open to first and second-year NSCC students from the following programs:
- Information Technology – Cyber Security
- Information Technology – Programming
- Information Technology – Web Development
Successful completion of this program will provide first year NSCC students with one elective credit towards their second year. The relevant Academic Chair will decide on credit or work term equivalency.
About Zagreb, Šibenik, Croatia and Algebra University College
Zagreb is the administrative, cultural and economic capital of Croatia and one of the oldest cities in Europe. With a population of close to 1 million, it is also a strong education centre a number of post-secondary institutions and over 85,000 students. Zagreb is also a city of science and culture with over 50 museums and galleries and more than 20 theatres and music venues. Many open-air events are offered throughout the summer.
Šibenik is located on the Adriatic Coast and it is one of the oldest cities in Croatia. The city boost a number of significant historical places and artifacts. The City Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia.
Croatia is one the safest countries in Europe as well as one of sunniest. It has been a popular tourism destination for decades and last year over 10 million people visited this country. There are a number of travel options available to Zagreb including planes, trains and buses.
The Algebra University College (AUC – http://summer.algebra.university/) is a private post-secondary institution that was established in 2006 in Zagreb, Croatia. This institution offers 4 bachelor level programs (Software Engineering, System Engineering, Multimedia Computing and Digital Marketing), and six master level programs (all in English: Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Digital Marketing, Game Development, Data, and e-Leadership MBA). Current enrollment is at 900 students.
Learning Outcomes:
- To learn about and share best practices to implement IT solutions in various areas;
- To develop and refine the skills needed to prepare for and participate in an international learning experience including research, organization, risk management, teamwork, interpersonal communication and cultural competence and sensitivity.
- To strengthen academic and portfolio profiles through enhanced research, analytical thinking, planning, communication, innovation, entrepreneurship, applied learning and marketing.
- To identify and reflect on the differences and similarities between Canada and Croatia
Selection Criteria:
- Must be a NSCC student with a valid passport (or the abilitty to get one).
- Must be a student enrolled in the identified IT programs
- Applicants must be in good academic standing.

Students should complete their application on or before November 15, 2019. Students will be notified in the second half of November if they are accepted to participate in this program. After receiving approval students will be given a payment schedule and will be expected to pay a $500 deposit as their first payment in January. At this time a learning contract will also be distributed to be signed by students and faculty outlining roles and responsibilities.

Pre-Departure:
- Students accepted into this program must participate in the pre-departure online course and one-day pre-departure conference on April 17, 2020
- Students must follow the NSCC international travel policy
Wait List:
Those who are interviewed but not selected may have the opportunity to be placed on a wait-list until all deposits are received.
Program Cost:
The approximate costs associated with this program are outlined below. The exact costs will be confirmed by NSCC and Algebra University College and will depend on the Euro exchange rate. The following costs will be included in your Program Fee payable to Nova Scotia Community College.

Participants are responsible for the costs of their airfare, accommodations, passport & passport photos, immunizations and prescriptions, Travel Health Insurance), meals and any other expenses not covered in the program fee.
Student Bursary
Students will have the opportunity to receive a bursary of up to $500 from NSCC International (made possible through the NSCC Foundation and NSCC International’s externally funded Projects) to participate in the program. Application details will be sent to those selected to participate in the program.
Withdrawal:
Students who withdraw from this program after they have confirmed their participation will forfeit their deposit.
