Bridge the Ocean Project Finland – 24-hour daylight, snow, 131 reindeer, 1 moose, and 1 ice fishing trip later, I would never have imagined in my wildest dreams I would find a renewed sense of ambition 200km past the Arctic Circle.

Lapland, Finland is upholstered in unmarked beauty. As far as the eye can see lingonberries, pine, spruce, and nature trails to use no matter your ability, or mode of transportation. In Lapland, the residents embrace nature, respect it, and let it provide a lifestyle they can make a living on. Being witness to this on our outings started conversations with ideas of how to incorporate and apply these principles to our everyday lives.

It soon became clear how life changing this global opportunity was. Students blossomed as they learned more about people, food, and diverse cultures in this far northern latitude. Inspired by new skills, brand new food dishes, and friendship, students shared their stories of where they started, how they got to where they are now, and aspirations for bright futures based on their time spent engaged with the Bridge the Ocean Project in Finland.

Being part of NSCC International gave me the opportunity to share my passion for teaching and learning, and help students cultivate theirs. Conversations with students reached unique levels of possibilities and potential with newly gained confidence. I am grateful for the lifelong connections I have made and look forward to sharing my experience for years to come with potential NSCC International Students. There is no moment greater than taking a chance on yourself to alter your life and grow from these opportunities.
