Kriestelle Baptiste’s Blog

Hi I am Kriestelle Baptiste, an international exchange student here at Nova Scotia Community College from T.A Marryshow Community College in Grenada. I am currently enrolled in the cooking program at the Pictou campus.

My experience in Canada so far has been a total eye opening one for me. The scenery, weather, music, dress code, public transportation system, building construction, norms among others are so much different to what is customary.

Grenada is a tropical country that experiences only rainy and dry season.  Having to transit from warmth to being so cold was quite a shock for me; only to be told this is nice weather – wait until it starts to snow.

In my country we call teachers by their last names. It was interesting having to adjust to calling teachers by their first names.

At home there is one main college, therefore the classes are bigger. We are evaluated during the semester which is graded out of 40% and at the end of the semester receive a final exam marked out of 60%. In Canada the class setting is different, plenty practical learning and we are assessed at the end of each course within the semester.
